The promo of the title track of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, titled Saahore Baahubali is out and it’s sure to give you the goosebumps. Do you sport the Dler Mehndi Brand ? Event managers may well be posing this question to performing debutantes as the dancing sardar has now decided to take young classical artisted under hid brood. Why is the Punjabi bhangra star so kee to play cultural ambassador? Simple. Daler is a trained classical musician. In fact, he never misses his two hour riyaaz despite hetic schedule. This is his way of watering the roots he grew from. How does it all work? The classical artistes will be travelliung with Daler. If he has a mega show, say in New Jersey, he will arrange for satellite shows for afficionados there.

If there's one singer who has consistently topped the music charts for the past three years in India, and currently coomands a fan following comparable to any cricket player or cine star, it's none other than the Prince of Punjabi Pop, Daler Mehndi. Nymbers such as Bolo Tara Ra Ra, Sade Naal Rahoge and Dardi Rab Rab have become so popular that even kids, not knowing the language, are singing them across the length and breadth of the country. In fact, his latest Ho Jayegi Balle Balle has almost become the national anthem.

With millions swinging to his foot-tapping music at concerts, discotheques and parties, it is hard to believe that Daler Mehndi actually contemplated suicide just a few year ago because his musical career appeared to be going nowhere! Mention Daler Mehndi and what's the first thing that comes to mind? "Dardi Rab Rab Kardi" and the cherubic face, the vivacious foot tapping music, the stocky, clad in black figure with the trademark glass beads and jazzy chola. That's the image that the King of Bhangra Pop would like to be etched in public mind. For not so long ago, this talented singer who wears his 'chola' like a second shin, had done his Bolo Ta Ra Ra video, wearing a very unlike Mehndi ensemble - jeans, shirt and that bane of any self respecting Sardarji, a patka - usually the headgear for kids. Mercifully, public memory is short and for this Daler Mehndi is thankful.

The grapevine has it that of late the Big-B seems to have taken a certain fancy to Daler Mehndi. Not only has the superstar got a few shots of Dardi Rab Rab Kardi, included in his latest film Mrityudata, but will himself be also dancing to its tune. Knowing he's not one to be easily impresses, other pop stars are asking, " Now how did you manage that Daler."

  • Friday, July 25th, 1997

In his first strat track he managed to steal the thunder from Amitabh Bachchan. The Na Na Re song sequence was one of the highlights of Mrityudaata. But now other stars are wary of sharing screen space with him. When he first cut an album Bolo Ta Ra Ra he was dismissed as a wannabe who was not hip. From starlet Deepshika to the ravishing Lisa Ray in Jalwa (from the Tunak Tunak album) even his videos are happening now. Meet Daler Mehndi, the uncrowned Badshah of Bhangra pop who makes albums sell even in times of recession and has set a trend for Punjabi Pop and how! Has Mehndi changed as a singer over the years? "I am essentially the same singer. Yes, I may have evolved more in terms of understanding music, for one learns of understanding." And is it tough handling his celebrity status? "My special friend up there has been really kind enough to give me the vision and insight to handle my celebrity status as you call it." he says modestly. What about his starry connection Mehndi has done two song sequences in Mrityudaata (the only highlight of the film was Na Na Na re where Mehndi and Amitabhpuy on their dancing shoes) and the forthcoming Arjun Pandit (where Juhi Chawla is Sheher di kudi ).

Ethnic pop itself is heady enough and when punch with the earthy and raunchy Punjabi folk, the brew can be rhythmically so intoxicating as to make even the most uninitiated rise to the occasion. Daler Singh Mehndi can easily pass foe someone in the crowd until he says Sa, Re, Ga... He may not have the looks to dazzle yet he possesses a voice soaked in meldoy that lends his personality an aura of respectability bordering glamour. He sees it as his passport to glory and fame, something he is desperate for. No wonder< he says, "I'll work hard for it." He claims thatmoney is not primary for him. " I come back from America after staying there for long, leaving a green-card behind. And mind you, I was doing regular stage shows there with Kabir Bedi, Rama Vij, Dara Singh et al," One could see his chest swell with pride.
