Rang De Basanti

Bhangra Pop King Daler Mehndi came out with all foot thumping passions in the frivolous soundtrack of ‘Rang De Basanti’ directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Enriched with patriotism, the vibrant song with its enthralling music created a style of its own and brought out the Punjabi flavor of Mehndi's voice.

The title song of the film composed by A. R. Rehman and authored by Ad world’s creative maverick Prasoon Joshi was already sung by ace playback singers of the country. But the producer, director, writer and music director seemed unsatisfied with the outcome. Finally, they jointly decided on calling the ‘King of Bhangra’ to perform the title track.

When Daler Mehndi visited A. R. Rehman at his Chennai Studio and heard the song, he made Rehman change the octave of the song. He felt that the song required the energy to evoke patriotism for one’s country and for that, higher pitch and higher octave was needed. The opening hook line ‘Ting Ling Ling’ which became the signature character of the song was also added by Mehndi.

A vibrant number that truly brought with it 'punjab-ki-khushbu', ‘Rang De basanti’ was highly foot tapping and was lapped by people from north to south, east to west across the country.
