My music is good for life itself
They say that Daler Mehndi has become an International Punjabi Pop star and his music can be heard not only in India but wherever there is an Indian living abroad. They also say that I am a well-groomed Sikh, whose demeanour behoves a neighbourhood friend, with a jovial relaxed manner. I am told that I am the world's best Known Punjabi pop star and one of India's largest selling artist Internationally. I recently returned from the foreign tour, 'blast 98'. The one-month-long tour was in the company of screen siren Shilpa Shetty and Channel V dancer-cum-veejay Javed Jafri. 'Blast 98' was held at Houston, Boston, Miami, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, Detroit, Memphis, Toronto, Chicago and other cities. It was a very successful tour.
My education in music began at the age of five. My father, Ajmera Singh, a classical singer, gave me my first music lessons. I left my house in Patbna at the age of 14 to become a disciple of Ustad Rahat Ali Khan who lived at Gorakhpur. My guru was a disciple of Ustad Bade Ghulam. I entered the world of bhangra pop in 1990 at the age of 23. Mt first album, Bolo Tara Ra Ra, was produced in 1995. The company, Magnasound, sold 3.5 million cassettes. This was an all-India record at the time. However, my second album Dardi Rab Rab Kardi surpassed the record established by my first album. My third album Ho Jayegi Balle Balle was also a big hit all over India.
I give Punjabi folk pop concerts to audiences that cannot understand a word of Punjabi. I deaw as large an audience in Kochi or in Madras as in Amritsar and Lucknow. My music is very good for the heart, the soul and for life itself. I am not surprised at this turn in my fortunes. Before Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra, I was known as Faltu Hussain; and music promoters would literally run away from me for I would accost them and insist that they listen to my music.Source :- The Tribune
